Gravel & Stepping Stones
Gravel is one of the most practical surfaces for a New Orleans side alley, courtyard or path: it drains, it does not need mowing, and set with stepping stones it gives you a clean way to the door.
Where gravel works
Side alleys where grass never gets enough sun, the strip between a walk and a fence, courtyards, and paths that get walked on too much for a lawn to survive.
Stepping stones
Square pavers or stones set level in the gravel, spaced for a natural stride, so the path is easy underfoot and the gravel stays put.
Keeping weeds down
The ground is prepared before the gravel goes down, so the new surface is not simply a thin layer over the weeds that were there before.
